Bennigan's and Steak & Ale restaurants close down....

Haven't been in a Bennigan's in years...craphole back then...my kids actually enjoyed the last remaining Steak & Ale we had in the area...used to be 4 of them within 20 minutes of us...

Quote:
Restaurant chains Bennigan's and Steak & Ale have filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection in one of the largest restaurant insolvencies in the U.S., according to media reports.

The Wall Street Journal said that both chains have shut down more than 300 eateries and are shedding thousands of workers. According to the report, employees were told late Monday there would not be enough money to pay them for the rest of the week. Both Bennigan's and Steak & Ale will liquidate assets and are not expected to re-open.

Both restaurant chains are owned and managed by Metromedia Restaurant Group, which also controls Bonanza, Ponderosa and 29 Degrees and Southlake Tavern. The latter two also are also shuttering locations, according to The Journal's report.

Not losing much. I always preferred TGI Fridays over Bennigans.

I don't think I ever went to either of these chains, but they're all the same anyway.

Is Beefstake Charlies still around?

I loved Steak & Ale and was sorry to see it go. The Bennigans in NB was okay years ago and it was the place to go on Friday nights for dinner. But they kept changing the menu and their ultimate nachos got smaller. We stopped going. The Friday's by us is horrible. I never liked it.

At least we have Chili's.

There is still a Sizzler that is open in Rockaway, NJ at the mall over there.

I love Steak & Ale. There is one not too far from my house.

I went to Steak & Ale while in Atlanta and had a decent experience there. Bennigans on the other hand was very average.

Is that Sizzler still open? Regrettably, I took my first girlfriend on a date there once(I don't know what I was thinking). I use to love that place. I would go a lot to the Ponderosa in York while in college.

I was at that Sizzler a few months ago when I was in Rockaway, NJ visiting family.

I used to work at the Ponderosa in York when we were there. They tore that building down.

As for the Beefsteak Charlies comment.....we used to go there all the time as kids to the location in Parsippany on Rt 46.

I used to go to a Beefsteak Charlie's in Forest Hills a long time ago, across from the LIRR station - it's been gone for years.

The Sizzler on Queens Blvd I went to a few times when I worked in the 110 Pct. I got violently ill from the salad bar, on two separate occasions, by the time I got back to the station house. Something must not have been at the proper temperature. The one on Metro isn't bad, but I haven't gone there in over a year, even though I'm always on Metropolitan Ave (& the place is certainly low-carb friendly). But now I tend to shy away from anything on the salad bar that isn't lettuce or cucumbers...

I remember going often to a Bennigan's in Great Neck around 20 years ago. I was friends with Steve Serby and his girlfriend at the time, and that was a favorite spot of theirs, and we met over there a bunch of times for appetizers (yummy) and drinks. Back in the days when I could eat all that breaded, fried food and it didn't affect me... I have no idea if that one is still there.

I love Steak and Ale - but I've never been to the restaurant...

I think that Sizzler in Rockaway had a couple of food poisoning incidents a while back (15 years ago?), so I had stopped going there...Now that my parents moved out of that area, I doubt I'll go back.

In college, we use to spend hours at the Ponderosa, just filling up on the buffet. The soft serve ice cream machine was helpless against the onslaught.

The one time I went to benningans I ordered a chicken breast stuffed with garlic/herb cheese. The thing was so greasy I was sick for 3 days afterwards--which is why it was the "one" time I ate at bennigan's.

In our first post child date, my wife and I went to the Steak and Ale here in Bethlehem while my mom watched our son. It was the only time I was at one and the food was unmemorable. I had never seen one before that and didn't realize it was a chain until I saw this thread.

Off original topic - I used to go very often to a place called Steak Loft on Utopia Parkway, in I guess it would be considered Whitestone - great food, and economically priced. It's been gone a while, I think.

Anyone else remember it (even though I don't think there's very many Queesites here...)?

I used to LOVE Bennigan's. Back in the day, when the Tides played at Met Park instead of Harbor Park, there was a Bennigan's down the street. Couldn't tell you how many times we went there for Banana Banshees. MMMMMM!

I used to go to a Benigan's in Hauppauge many moons ago with the crowd from work...
Don't remember much about the food, but the drinks were great

Going back to work after lunch was sometimes an adventure

The place was always crowded.

Thumbs up "High Steaks" Dept.

A great steak restaurant chain around here is Logan's Roadhouse...complete with the bucket of peanuts on each table (and a huge barrel full in the reception area) and shells all over the floor.

The reason I got the job at the NB Bennigans was I was dating a bartender from that one. At the time, thanks to you guys going there for lunch and checking out my chicks huge boobs, it was the number one Bennigan's in the COUNTRY. They got to answer the phone with: "Thanks for calling Bennigan's the big house , so and so speaking, how can I help you?"

There was one in Hicksville on Old Country Road near 106, another in Valley Stream right by the drive-in (sigh) that looked like a castle from the outside, and one on the top level of the Queens Center Mall. There may have been others as well, but those are the ones I used to frequent--and I do mean frequent.

Best soup/salad/dessert bar EVER, with a banana nut loaf that was worth the price of the meal by itself.

Just noticed you are from Patchogue. She used to work at a real dive there North of Sunrise Highway called "Half Crown pub". Boy was that place a hole.

I was banned from Sizzler in the early 90's for stealing dessert. It wasn't stealing, it was an educational service. I wanted them to know that not giving a bowl with the all-you-can-eat-dinner-only dinner was not a fool proof plan to avoid theft loss and that you can just get soft-serve with your hands if you really want it.

Then I dated the guy who owned the bar they put in its place and we had it off on the bar after closing as my revenge.
